Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution is a clear, almost colourless, syrupy oral liquid. It has a strawberry flavour.

 

Docusate Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution contains Docusate Sodium 50mg in 5ml. Docusate Sodium is a laxative.

Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution is a P Pharmacy Medicine. People can buy products classified as ‘pharmacy medicines’ ( P ) but only from a pharmacy and in the presence of a pharmacist. These medicines, also called ‘pharmacy-only medicines’, are not usually displayed on open shelves.

Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution is used to prevent and treat constipation. It can also be used before a stomach X-ray such as a barium meal. Always read the label.

 

How to use Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution 

Take 10 to 15ml (two to three 5ml spoonful’s) three times a day. Take as a single dose followed by plenty of water or flavoured drink e.g. milk or orange juice. The maximum daily dose is ten 5ml spoonfuls (50ml). Reduce the dose as your condition improves. Always read the label.

If you forget to take Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution, as soon as you remember, take a dose and then continue the normal course of treatment. Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose

If you are taking Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution before a stomach X-ray, please follow the recommended instructions from your GP or pharmacist.  The suggested dose is eight 5ml spoonfuls.

Children under 18 years
Docusate Sodium Adult 50mg/5ml Oral Solution is not suitable for children aged 6 months to 12 years but a suitable alternative, Docusate Sodium paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is available. Follow your doctor’s instructions.

Warnings
Do not use laxatives for longer than 1 week unless directed by a doctor.

Ask a doctor before use if you have:

  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that continues over a period of two weeks
  • your abdomen is tender to the touch or hurts when you move

 

Stop use and ask a doctor if:

  • you have rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative. These may indicate a serious condition
  • you accidentally take too much
  • in case of overdose, get medical helps or contact a healthcare professional immediately

 

Precautions

  • if pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacists before use
  • if you suffer from allergies seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before use
  • keep out of reach of children

 

Adverse events and precautions

Special warning: Do not use laxative products when abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting is present unless directed by a physician. If you have noticed a sudden change in bowel movements that persists over a period of two weeks, consult a physician before using a laxative. Do not use laxative products for longer than 1 week unless told to do so by a doctor. Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative may indicate a serious condition; discontinue use and consult your physician. If you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a healthcare professional before using these products. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional healthcare assistance immediately. Keep out of children’s reach.

Adverse events

Reporting suspected adverse reactions after authorisation of the medicinal product is important. It allows continued monitoring of the benefit/risk balance of the medicinal product.
