Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution contains Docusate Sodium 12.5mg in 5ml. Docusate Sodium is a laxative.

Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is a P Pharmacy Medicine. People can buy products classified as ‘pharmacy medicines’ ( P ) but only from a pharmacy and in the presence of a pharmacist. These medicines, also called ‘pharmacy-only medicines’, are not usually displayed on open shelves.

Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is a laxative. It is used to prevent and treat constipation. It can also be used before a stomach X-ray such as a barium meal.

 

How to use Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution

For infants aged over 6 months: one 5ml spoonful three times a day. Dilute the medicine in a glass of flavoured drink such as fruit juice or milk and give to the infant or child to drink within 30 minutes of preparation

Children aged 2-12 years: one to two 5ml spoonfuls three times a day. Dilute the medicine in a glass of flavoured drink such as fruit juice or milk and give to the infant or child to drink within 30 minutes of preparation.

Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution should not be given to infants under the age of 6 months. Always read the label.

If you forget to give a dose of Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution, as soon as you remember, give the infant or child a dose and then continue the normal course of treatment. Do not take a double dose of either medicine to make up for a forgotten dose

When taken before a stomach X-ray, please follow the recommended instructions from your GP or pharmacist. The dose recommended is 30ml (six 5ml spoonfuls) as a single dose.

Children under 18 years
Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution is suitable for children aged 6 months to 12 years. Docusate Sodium Paediatric 12.5mg/5ml Oral Solution should not be given to infants under the age of 6 months. Follow your doctor’s instructions.

Warnings
Do not use laxatives for longer than 1 weeks unless directed by a doctor.

Ask a doctor before use if you have:

  • stomach pain
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • noticed a sudden change in bowel habits that continues over a period of two weeks
  • your abdomen is tender to the touch or hurts when you move

 

Stop use and ask a doctor if:

  • you have rectal bleeding or fail to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative. These may indicate a serious condition
  • you accidentally take too much
  • in case of overdose, get medical helps or contact a healthcare professional immediately

 

Precautions

  • if pregnant, planning to become pregnant or breastfeeding, ask your doctor or pharmacists before use
  • if you suffer from allergies seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist before use
  • keep out of reach of children

 

Adverse events and precautions
All medicines cause adverse events and should not be used in certain circumstances and by certain people with certain health issues. Please see Patient Information Leaflet above.

Special warning: Do not use laxative products when abdominal pain, nausea, or vomiting is present unless directed by a physician. If you have noticed a sudden change in bowel movements that persists over a period of two weeks, consult a physician before using a laxative. Do not use laxative products for longer than 1 week unless told to do so by a doctor. Rectal bleeding or failure to have a bowel movement after use of a laxative may indicate a serious condition; discontinue use and consult your physician. If you are pregnant or nursing a baby, seek the advice of a healthcare professional before using these products. In case of accidental overdose, seek professional healthcare assistance immediately. Keep out of children’s reach.

Adverse events

Reporting suspected adverse reactions after authorisation of the medicinal product is important. It allows continued monitoring of the benefit/risk balance of the medicinal product.
