Nystaform Range (POM)
Dual and triple topical combinations of anti-fungal (Nystatin), anti-bacterial (chlorhexidine) and anti-inflammatory (hydrocortisone) agents to treat all aspects of simple skin infections. Nystaform is recommended as a cost effective alternative to Fusidic acid preparations. This product is a prescription only medicine.
Q) What is it?
A) Nystaform is available in either cream
or ointment form and contains Nystatin (anti-fungal, 100,000 i.u. per g),
Chlorhexidine (antibacterial, 1% w/w) and in the HC forms, hydrocortisone
(anti-inflammatory, 0.5 – 1.0% w/w).
Q) What is it used for?
A) Nystaform is used for treating
skin infections of either fungal or bacterial origin. The cream is used for
moist conditions and the ointment is used for dry conditions.
Q) How do I use it?
A) For both adults and children.
Nystaform Cream: For topical application only. Apply to infected areas 2-3 times
daily. Continue application for one week after lesions have healed.
Nystaform HC Cream / Ointment: For topical application only. Apply to infected areas 2-3 times daily. Treatment should be for a maximum period 7 days.
Q) Are there any special precautions?
A) Tuberculous
lesions of the skin. Known sensitivity to any of the ingredients. Avoid contact
with eyes. If sensitivity occurs, or if new infection appears, discontinue use
and institute alternative therapy. Cetostearyl alcohol may cause local skin
reactions (e.g. contact dermatitis). In infants, long-term continuous topical
steroid therapy should be avoided.
Q) Can Nystaform be used during pregnancy?
A) Nystaform
should not be used unless the doctor thinks it is necessary.
Q) Are there any side effects?
A) Side-effects are
uncommon. Hypersensitivity-type reactions, including application site reaction
and allergic reactions, have been reported rarely.
Q) How much does Nystaform cost?
A) Nystaform Cream is
£2.62 (30g), Nystaform HC Cream is £2.66 (30g) and Nystaform HC Ointment is
£2.66 (30g).
Q) Are there any resistance issues?
A) Currently, there
are no known resistance issues.
Q) Does it stain?
A) The cream and ointment are
yellow-coloured due to the presence of Nystatin. There is a potential for the
preparation to stain clothes and it is recommended that the cream/ointment is
massaged into the skin and allowed to ‘dry’ before the area is covered with
clothes.
Q) Isn’t chlorhexidine just an anti-septic?
A) The mode
of action of chlorhexidine is such that it has anti-bacterial properties.
